Database Abstraction Questions

1. Why Pear? I've also heard really good things about the ADODB Library.

2. Was any performance testing done? What kind of hit are we going to take on database calls. I've seen some benchmarks showing pear with a 150% overhead with ADODB much closer to native MySQL.

Just wondering what the rationale was for using Pear over ADODB or other alternatives. Thanks

Open Question to Developers

Postnuke is becoming widely accepted, not only for those who are pure webmasters but also the development minded among us. As a result of this there are probably more than a few sites that are customising PN to suit thier particular use, even though we know that the product is still in beta mode. This inherently causes problems at upgrade time. But I must admit with my own site, alot of the changes are cosmetic.

Q1) Has the team ever considered making the visual side of PN a template based system?

This would allow users to customise the look without having to touch code. Take for example the use of [strong]middot[strong] in the sideblocks. I am replacing mine with an image, which I will have to do again on the next upgrade. Even the use of OpenTable() and CloseTable() could be replaced sometimes.

niceguyeddie writes -- Yes, this has been discussed. We currently have a project in the works for theme issues, and the points you raised have also been added as well. Eventually, it would be nice to have every aspect of style and display ripped from the core and added to the themes where they should be.

Q2) What impact is the introduction of the new user system going to have on current modules, including standard PN ones? Is it going to touch every piece of PN?

niceguyeddie writes -- I will give everyone an update on the users system once it is in CVS. Currently, Sean is making it so plugin developers and webmasters have control over the permission system. There are quite a few changes that have to be made, over probably several versions of the .7 Rogue series.

The above are the major ones I had been thinking about. Now for a "lighter" one...

Q3) Private Messages, are these going to be improved? (not considering King Richards recent announcement) The current implemenation is just downright confusing for a non-seasoned web user.

niceguyeddie writes -- KR is working on the PMessages. I only have an idea of the changes, and have not seen a scope on the project

Others...
1. Reviews. Users are able to include an image in their review, however it must reside in modules/Reviews/images... Do you not think this is pretty useless unless the user can supply one?

niceguyeddie writes -- There are several security issues that you open when allowing just anyone to upload anything to your server. You could save it to SQL, but then you open up several performance issues. Besides, reviews are plugins, and for every default plugin I am sure that someone could write something better that would suit their needs more than what is provided.

2. Topics. Why does each topic *have* to have an image? Cannot this be optional and the topic name be made into a link as well?

niceguyeddie writes -- The article system is due for a rewrite in the .8 series. We probably will not be doing any whole sale changes to the topics, articles, etc until that time, unless those changes can be used throughout the system, like the autolinking, etc.

3. MessageBox(). Is this ever going to be moved out into a separate file instead of having to include it inside another file?

niceguyeddie writes -- Good idea, and it has been discussed briefly on the dev list by Seb

Hope I got all of these answered. Kinda felt like an essay test:)

Well that's about it. I am *not* griping about any of these, I am quite happy with PN, it's direction and excellent results so far.

Massive Multisite Fan Stories?

But I'd like to do maybe four or five shows and do it across multiple sites to really build a large online community for them and the new fanfiction stuff that I'm working on.

I have the industry "connects", but I think by pulling all our resources together we can really build something big and huge, instead of us trying market everything separately and "competing" with each other.

It'd be really cool if there was a way we could have one big shared user DB with global user rankings for future contests.

Anyone interested in forming a large entertainment community based on Nuke? Something that could rival UGO.net and Ifilm?

If so drop me an email at malexandria@eclipsemagazine.com.

The first present from NukePack

All functions of core codes have been extracted automatically (by my patented uniNuke splitter modul) and left unchanged (except of removal of comments) from the original files and have been stored separately in the includes/functions/xxx.php/ directory as func-yyy.php separate php codes.

The result is a functionally equivalent, but modularized postNuke core.

So if somebody (like King Richards :)) or me) would like to "patch" the core, this can be simply done by modifying and replacing or adding only the affected functions not the whole file (so may interfere with other
patches).

Installation is simple: copy all files and subdirs into your postNuke root.

Overwritten files can be found in the backup subdir.

NukeAddOn work in progress...

1. Port all NukeAddOn (OP)
2. Polish all the current AddOn
3. Start a new Advance Private Messages (OP)
4. Start WYSIWYG HTML editor for entire PN system (OP)

I still have more plan on my mind, but this four will be my first project. Once the project can run I will drop into the CVS and hope to have others developer help me out :)

So stay tuned!

P.S. OP= On Progress

Questions about PostNuke

While I think that FB and the folks at PostNuke are both doing an excellent job, I have concerns with both projects and have a number of questions I think most Nukers would like to ask. Let me also state here that I am taking no sides here - I am trying to do what is best for my site.

Here goes -

At some point I figure PostNuke will have forked pretty far from PHP-Nuke as to be incompatible. True or false? If true, how long til then?

Will there be conversion scripts from PHP-Nuke to PostNuke available? I know this can be a mess, but perhaps from current version (of PHP-Nuke) to current version (of PostNuke)?

What about themes and modules? How will they cope?

What's next for both projects? Any info here would be reassuring

I hope someone can provide some answers - I would like to have some idea in which direction to go. I think FB has provided a great web solution, but am concerned about future development. I think that the PostNuke folks have a better path to go down, but have no experience with them and am a little hesitant to jump horses in mid stream, as it were. Thanks much...
